Rayne village hall was about to witness something new, something
wonderful, and no body could predict what was about to happen.
The park committee had hassled and bullied 90 residents of Rayne,
and a few outsiders, to buy into their night of fun. 7,30pm, the
bar was open, the projector set up, the music playing.
Ten tables beautifully decorated, named and ready. Guests started
to arrive, slowly at first but then in droves.
The hall was full, drinks were flowing,
racing was about to happen…when
the projector blew up…..our first event and it was all going
wrong!
Think quick was the cry, and we did. Mike & Christy’s
TV, big and bold, came to our rescue.
During the Malay we auctioned off two cuddly
toys donated by Harrods of London, yes really. A bargain to the
winning bidder at £35
Suddenly it was all happening, races came
thick and fast, money was won and lost, then the replacement
projector arrived, time for the raffle draw. First prize a new
DVD player and 30 DVD’s,
followed by many more great prizes.
Back to the racing, each race winners owner was receiving a cash
prize and a gift, and all were ecstatically happy.
Finally race 6, the tri cast race, the person
picking the first 3 past the post in the correct order would
win £100. An eerie
silence, then loud bellows and cheers as the horses approached
the final bend, a crescendo of noise greeted the finish, and one
lucky winner was £100 better off.
Finally the auction race, each horse bid
for by auction, big money at stake. Tables clubbing together
to buy a horse. Their off, more cheers more noise than ever,
and a winner, a whole £125 to
the winning table, who very kindly donated a portion back to our
fund.
What a night, in all park raised over £2000 for the kitty
to go towards our new children’s playground…but this
was just the start………………………
